Energy-Efficient Temperature Recommendations
According to 2019 guidelines that paralleled similar guidelines from 10 years earlier, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends using a programmable thermostat to change the temperature in your home based on whether you are at home, away from home or asleep:
- At home: 78 degrees
- Away: 85 degrees
- Asleep: 82 degrees
Keep in mind that these summer temperature recommendations may not be perfect for your family, and you may want to personalize them. Try to find the highest possible temperature at which you can comfortably get a good night’s rest. While 65 degrees is the optimal temperature for deep sleep, you can most likely opt for a much higher temperature than this in the summer if you want to lower your electric bill dramatically.
You can also acclimate to higher temperatures by gradually adjusting your thermostat over the course of several days until you’re comfortable with the recommended 78 degrees.
The Department of Energy also recommends using fans to lower the temperature of your house further. By using ceiling or box fans, you can raise the temperature of your home another four degrees without noticing much of a difference in comfort.
